ネイティブチェック２（could you / give me）

これは紙面上のNCではなく口答指導でした。

★レストランで、客からウェイターへのせりふとして典型的に見られるこの一句より。

Could you give me some water?

Comment:

Unnatural.

Reason:（代弁）

Could you ~?はとても丁寧な表現ですが、give meはとてもストレートな表現です。よって、Could youとgive meがマッチしません。

Improvement:

May I have some water?

You're right about the tone of particular phrases/words and the importance matching these. Of course, we should be saying, "May I have a glass of water?"

注）Could you give me ~?という表現はどれも×ということではありません。
例：Could you give me a hand?
      Could you give me a minute?
      Could you give me your phone number?
      Could you give me a receipt for it?
      Could you give me some advice on ~?
      Could you give me an example?
