中学英語の落とし穴4(the)の
I don’t have the time to go to the library.
は,日本人にとって「あると気持ち悪いthe」の例でしたが,今回は,「ないと気持ち悪いthe」の例です。
素材文に以下のような文を書きました。(学校行事・ボランティア活動の集合場所)
All volunteers should be at school before 9 o'clock.
The notice says we will meet at school before 9 o'clock.
はい。at the schoolと修正した日本人校正者が複数。
go to school, study at schoolなどの慣用句ではschoolに冠詞はつかないというのは周知でも,こういう場合はtheがいるでしょう?という語感のようです。
しかし,

“should be at school” sounds the best to me.
You could say “should be at the school” too, but it has a slightly different flavor (as if there are several places to meet at, but in this case everyone should meet at the school, and not at another place, like the park)
The reason is probably because words like “school,” “home” and “work” are special: they usually appear without “a” or “the”.
